“If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you.” -America’s favorite Dirty Desert-Gypsy: Mr. Jesus Christ
The view from seat 12A on United flight 203 is an introspective one. “Who am I?”, “What have I accomplished?”, “ What is my identity?”. Ya know, the usual line of questioning you barrage yourself with at 5:30 in the morning, on 45 minutes of restless sleep, as you embark on a life changing 6 month long body piercing tour across America, ending with a move to another country to live with your incredible, Canadian wife. Ya know, the usual. And then I remembered something a dear friend of mine said to me: “Not everybody has the guts to do what they want.”.
About 7 years ago I started working in a studio who’s Body Piercing side was subpar, but at an average of 30+ clients a day, it was a great opportunity to cut my teeth and finally pierce full-time (I also got to work alongside my first body modification liaison, Jason Prince, but I’m sure I’ll go into that in a later post). It was a real “Sysiphis-type” situation to get the upgrades I felt were necessary to mutually benefit my skill-set and the studio’s bank account, so after 3 years I did what any twenty-something up-and-comer would do: I whined about it on the internet. Pathetic, I know, but the right person saw it and pointed me in the right direction (I owe you one, Em).
A little over 3 years ago, Visions Tattoo Gallery took a risk, and gave a lunatic from Connecticut who lived in his van a job. For that, I am eternally grateful. I just worked my last shift at one of the greatest studios the industry could ever know. Angela and CanMan work really hard to keep it immaculate and on the Greater Boston radar, and that kept me busy piercing pretty much year round. They got me my APP membership. They got me working tattoo conventions. They spoiled me rotten with all the jewelry and tools I ever asked for. They were the Paula Abdul and I was the animated cat from the Paula Abdul video, if you know what I’m sayin’, and I liked that dynamic.
Yesterday we had a staff dinner followed by laser-tag (my request) and though it wasn’t said verbatim, I believe the camaraderie we’ve always had as a staff has turned into very fruitful relstionships that will stand the test of time. I love all you guys.
Today was really bittersweet. Some came to get pierced one last time, some to buy jewelry, and some to just came to say goodbye. There were laughs, tears, well-wishes, and lots of hugs; It really caught me off guard. Needless to say I kept it light, but everyone’s good-on-ya’s made me feel loved and appreciated. May our paths cross again someday.
Right now I’m on my way to spend two weeks with my wife and our two tiny dogs before I hit the road and I couldn’t be happier. I love them with all my simple heart, and I’m overjoyed that I get to spend time with them before I go out to try and make enough money for our immigration fees.
I’ll leave you with a bit of advice, “Give all you got, cause you only get what you gave.”
Thanks for everything everybody, I won’t take it for granted.
