Just the Tip

You may have noticed an obnoxious little banner at the top righthand corner of your web browser when you visited Sacred Debris today announcing how many times you’ve visited the site. I hate it. It seems pushy and I don’t want to be pushy. I had hoped that readers would want to help the site out because they appreciate the content we’re offering, much of it literally one of a kind. Help comes in many forms; contributing articles, photographs and video to the site is one way and dropping some coin in the tip jar is another.

As I mentioned in the ONE YEAR LATER post, donations go to cover my time, aging equipment (VHS VCRs, 8mm Cameras, DVC cameras, portable hard drive space for video, negative scanners) and keeping everything running. Much like Wikipedia, if every viewer who came to SD last year donated one dollar, I wouldn’t need to fundraise again.

But that hasn’t happened.

So starting today you’ll see the view counter in your browser window and on your 20th visit to the site it’ll take you to a reminder page. I apologize for how crass it is, but I’m trying this method out before I got for a more drastic approach.

After you donate- $3 for one month or $30 for the year*- the obnoxious reminders will disappear and you’ll be able to view the site normally. I greatly prefer to keep this voluntary, but long term there’s a possibility that videos will either go behind a tip-enforced wall or simply not be added. They represent the most work and the most resources and you folks will be voting with your support whether or not that have a place on the site. I have a full queue of videos that are in the pre-editing point that I’m holding off on adding due to time and hardware constraints that I’d love to share, just a matter of gauging interest. Year subscriptions will also qualify you to be on my mailing list for postcards and goodies from time to time.

You can also use the PAYPAL donation button on the right sidebar of the screen if that’s more convenient.

If you can’t help financially but would like to contribute articles, photographs or video content to the site, please contact me at [email protected]

*You can tip any amount over the suggested donation.
