How do you introduce Tom Brazda? Seriously, I’m asking you, how the fuck do you even begin to summarize a titan like him? If you pierce, you’ve at least heard his name mentioned. He’s a fucking legend. And next time you speak about him in the past tense, stop it – Tom never stopped kicking ass and taking names. He’s been gracious enough to wax intellectual with us, so y’all turn off your cell phones and read closely – Tom deserves your undivided attention.

Ari – Tom, give us a brief introduction

Tom – My name is Tom Brazda, I started piercing in an amateur way around 1989. I went professional in 1991, so 28 years of experience of watching things happen.

Ari – I would love to start earlier with some of the first experiences you had with piercing before you were a piercer. Were you getting pierced before you got into the business? Continue reading

Genital Bisection

I’ve been slowly working on editing an 8mm video sourced from the original cassette of RS having his bisected penis/scrotum reworked by Dr. Ronald Brown into a vagina for the last few weeks. It’s a daunting process, two hours of video with each uncompressed clip ranging from 10gb to 45gb that’s taxing the limits of my steadily aging MacBook Pro. I never met RS in person; our interactions were through honest to goodness pen and paper correspondence, so I never had the opportunity to ask him why, after years of self surgery fully bisecting both his penis and his scrotum, he decided to have the while works turned into a vagina, but I’m willing to bet the answer is as simple as ‘because I wanted to’ or ‘because I can’ which I’ll gladly take.

Dr. Brown explains in the tape that the procedure he uses relocates glans tissue to provide a functional clitoris, and erectile tissue from the shaft to allow for outer labia that engorge when erect. One of the benefits of Brown’s outlaw surgeries was that he could deal in experimentation; if he had a patient who wanted a penectomy he could offer them a free procedure in exchange for their consent to perform it in stages, allowing him to hone new techniques for his SRS patients.

I wrote about the leftovers from RS’s surgeries back in 2008 on BME/NEWS: The Curious Case of the Human Shiitake. It seems that the photo attachments are broken, but it’ll give a little backstory on what happened after the procedure that’ll hopefully be worth a laugh.

As my wife and I busily prepare our luggage for this weekend’s trip to the Walt Disney World Resort in (rainy) Orlando, Florida I thought it was only fitting that I put together some very NSFW photos of Jack Yount’s Disney tattoos for archival here at Sacred Debris.

Jack’s quaint little house in Zephyrhills was filled with paintings and statues- mostly homoerotic subject matter but with a noticeable presence of Disneyana; he was a great fan of Mickey Mouse and the Disney animated films and in the early 1990s began a full leg tattoo of iconic Disney moments by Ancient Art’s Just Plain Bud Pierson. The tattoos were a whimsical contrast to Jack’s other more shocking body modifications; the placement of Timothy Mouse 1 shrieking in horror at the sight of his subincised penis was intentionally tongue in cheek.

Jack was very encouraging when I decided on a Disney-themed tattoo for my own back-piece (pictured above at Scarwars2 in LA) by Inksmith & Roger’s Mike Wilson.

The photos include Disney tattoos by Bud, Jack’s pieced, split and silicone enhanced penis and R.S.- the owner of the infamous removed split penis that ended up in a jelly jar.

Halfadravya- Tom Brazda NSFW

JMsubpierce01GMsubpierceI’ve been interested in body art for a long time. I now have a large subincision, head split halfway back, and three pairs of 8 gauge jewelry up both sides of the subincision. If I’m interested in impressing a partner, I put six captive bead rings in the holes, and they’re 3/4″ inside diameter and hard to ignore. If I’m going to the gym to work out I just put in six 8 ga. barbells so when I’m in the shower it isn’t as obvious that I’m carrying around a significant amount of metal. I’ve worked out regularly for the past few years, and nobody has ever commented on or questioned my genital piercings, though occasionally somebody will say something about my unusual tattoos – J. 1

There aren’t many subcultures where you can talk about a penis in terms of being famous or influential. Adult movies, certainly, have had their share of iconic appendages so much so that names of particularly endowed stars from the 1970s and 80s are still currency when talking about larger than average measurements. Our own body modification community, in it’s recent history, has also had it’s own rogues gallery of iconic altered penises like Carl Carrol who appeared originally in PFIQ #15 and GM who was known to BME readers as “J” who’s “story of a subincision” article and videos 2 are frequently cited by clients requesting the procedure as a major inspiration.

Other subincisions had appeared on BME and SPC before J, but his had a certain aesthetic appeal that became the archetype for a split penis. While doing his early self done modification work he was unaware of the larger community that shared his passions, keeping it a secret from all but his most intimate contacts. We met through the UNIQUE mailing list 3 and eventually met in person in 1999 at the first ModCon event in Toronto. When he discovered body piercing it was a novelty to him- I remember an excited letter where he marveled that “they can PIERCE that now??” in reference to a basic genital piercing. The dichotomy always struck me funny- that a man who had disunited his urethra to the scrotum and who used mercury filled balloons as sounding rods had no idea about the piercing scene that ran parallel to heavier modifications.

J travelled to Toronto to meet BME founder Shannon Larratt and stopped by Stainless Studios where he had Tom Brazda do a series of piercings on his split shaft and glans; we affectionately called his reverse Prince Albert a halfadravya because it was the 1990s and making up names for piercings was all the rage. It’s my sincere hope that it in no way influenced the dolphin kisses and panda bites of today.

Due to complications with the teflon coating on one of the stainless steel balls implanted in Jack Yount’s scrotum (he had been castrated and had his testicles replaced with steel) he suffered an infection that turned gangrenous necessitating the amputation of his scrotum. The scar that starts just above his flame tattoo and runs up his shaft is the healed results of the amputation.

His penis had been subincised and his glans split/pierced and the hole that’s visible in the center of the flame tattoo was where his urethra was rerouted to via surgery. His justification for the urethral relocation was difficulty in urinating due to the increase in penis size from silicone injections, but his later experimentation with growing breasts via HRT (and injected silicone) opens up the possibility of different reasons for the opening; Jack kept some of his modifications shrouded in mystery.

Extreme Edgeplay: Mercury Sounding

The full import is finally complete on SUBINCISION FUN, the video originally submitted to the spcOnline site in 1996/7 by my friend JM 1 2, who was one of the most fascinating and genuine modification fans I met through Ken Schein’s UNIQUE mailing list during the tenure of my subscription. He was a renaissance man and a true gentleman, preferring to “not cuss around Ladies” and giving his lecture on ‘Tens Units for Pain Management in Body Modification’ at the 1999 ModCon event using the word doodlehanger in place of penis as not to offend.

When we started corresponding his letter usually derailed quickly from our modification talk and we’d share stories of travel, kinky sex and adventure. J was an edge player who got into modification through sexual exploration; if putting things in your penis felt good, he reasoned, it would make sense to split the underside open to expose even more of the sensitive urethra. He recorded his adventures- photographs, VHS tapes and plaster molds of his cutting progress which he’d share with other modification fans he met along the way.

One of the most hardcore bits of play from his contribution was- and I can’t emphasize do not try this at home enough– urethral sounding with a ballon filled with mercury 3. He claimed to have been turned on by the surging of the mercury inside of his penis. A rubber band was tied to the balloon and secured over his glans to avoid the balloon going further than expected.

This short clip features him inserting the balloon in his urethra. I’ve seen this footage dozens of times and it still makes fills me with a nervous awe.

Sandbox members: the extended edit is up for you folks. Enjoy!

  3. Symptoms of mercury poisoning include: tremors; emotional changes (e.g., mood swings, irritability, nervousness, excessive shyness); insomnia; neuromuscular changes (such as weakness, muscle atrophy, twitching); headaches; disturbances in sensations; changes in nerve responses; performance deficits on tests of cognitive function. At higher exposures there may be kidney effects, respiratory failure and death.
