I’ve spent the last few days sorting Allen Falkner’s photographs from the 2005 Scarwars Philadelphia event; it’s the first time in eleven years that I’ve looked at his output from that weekend as a body of work and not just individual photos- three discs so far- discs filled with so many amazing memories, images and personalities that it’s been hard to step away from the archival and prepare any of the images for a Sacred Debris update.
I was going to start with his beautifully visceral procedural photos, but the candid portraits that he captured of the attending artists and guest really stood out so we’re going to lead off with this portrait of Toronto’s Blair Mclean for the ‘SCARtists’ series. Blair didn’t work the event, but was a major inspiration to the artists on hand.
“We’re all connected — everything’s connected. From the chair I’m sitting in to the TV, everything is all connected. The way I see things you just have to respect everything around you and respect the environment around and everyone’s differences and spiritual beliefs. There are so many contradictory beliefs. Even I contradict myself, because one day I feel different than the other day. And there’s nothing wrong with that — you have to be able to live in the middle ground and appreciate that. I don’t really have a label for my spirituality — you just have to have respect for everybody’s beliefs and ideas as long as they’re not harming anybody or the environment.” Blair, BME Interview 1
